Worldview
Mission Training (WMT) was formed in 2000 to meet and train the
non-Western church for missions, and to help reactivate the North American church for
a new wave of missionary sending.
Some Background
Throughout modern times, North American Christians have led the effort in sending missionaries around the world. North American Christians pioneered ministry throughout the world in places where the threat of persecution loomed and where physical needs were unimaginable by Western standards.
Throughout the years, the American church has sent thousands of long-term missionaries and tens of thousands of short-term missionary teams from these shores. The heavens have been bombarded with prayer for the unreached. Millions of dollars have been generously donated to help bring people around the world into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. These heart-felt efforts have resulted in millions of people giving their hearts to Christ.
Another Perspective
In spite of the effort of North American believers—65% of the world’s popultation has no way to hear the saving message of Jesus Christ. If that fact wasn’t shocking enough, consider this. Of all the monies donated for missions—only .05% is designated to reach three-quarters of the world’s unreached population!
Furthermore, these 65% are people considered to be the poorest of the poor, and among the most resistant to the Gospel. They live in countries that embrace Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Shintoism. They live in countries that are closed to Christian missionaries—especially missionaries from the West.
These daunting issues of global proportion, coupled with a new wave of North American materialism, have been a source of discouragment to a great many North American missionaries. In fact, the number of American missionaries has dropped by 50% since 1988. Many have wondered, “Will the great commission be fulfilled without North American missionaries?”
God Has A Plan!
God is raising up missionaries from outside of North America from countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Africa, South Korea, China, the Philippines and Russia, among others—countries that were previously considered mission fields themselves. Today, non-Western missionaries constitute about 55% of the world’s missionary force.
These non-Western missionaries have free access into closed countries, unlike North Americans, and in many instances are culturally more similar to those whom they are ministering. This provides a tremendous advantage to sharing the gospel.
However, many of these new missionaries experience a high failure rate because they don’t have proper training. Following the examples of those who have gone before them in missionary efforts, they are both having great success AND are making many of the same mistakes that American missionaries made 40 – 50 years ago!
